The use of cards for divination by fortune tellers in the 18th century.

Tarot began to transform from a game into a tool for divination and spirituality. French scholar Antoine Court de Gébelin suggested that the Tarot deck may have originated in ancient Egyptian civilization, believing that each card in the Major Arcana contained knowledge of mystical rituals and spiritual journeys.  Later, Jean-Baptiste Alliette, also known as Etteilla, became one of the first seers to design a tarot deck specifically for divination, and wrote a textbook explaining how to read the cards, which marked the beginning of the serious use of tarot in divination.
